Jakarta. Many domestic flights remain canceled as of Tuesday morning despite the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport's reopening.

Indonesia's main international airport was closed for two days since Sunday after volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau was detected in the airspace.

The Soekarno-Hatta Airport, located just outside Jakarta, is now back in service after traces of ash receded. However, the flight information display system showed that many airlines still needed extra time for adjustments as of around 8 a.m.

Flights to Surabaya, Pontianak, Lampung, Batam, Makassar, and Banjarmasin were still canceled. Several other flights were on hold, while some managed to be on schedule.

"Airlines need time to organize their opening, they also need time to organize slot times," the airport's assistant deputy for communications Yudistiawan said.

According to Yudistiawan, the airport needs about 24 hours to enter full operations after it reopens. He went on to say that flights would take place in phases to maintain the smooth flow of the affected aircraft.

"It'd be best for passengers to contact the respective airlines to confirm their flight status," Yudistiawan said.

As of 10 a.m., the airport has served 174 flights since it resumed operations in the early hours of Tuesday. About 150 of those were domestic flights, while some 24 others served international routes.

Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi had told reporters that the airport would need "a little extra time for preparations" despite its reopening, citing that only ash-free, airworthy plane can take off. He also instructed authorities to make sure that the runways and taxiways are clear of volcanic ash.

Indonesia is also offering emergency stay permits and no overstay fee for the stranded foreigners.
