Soekarno-Hatta Airport Reopens After Volcanic Ash Closure
Jakarta. Soekarno-Hatta Airport has finally reopened after two days of volcanic ash-related closure.
The volcanic ash spewed by Mount Anak Krakatau’s eruptions had fueled travel disruptions across the country, including at Indonesia’s main international airport since Sunday, leaving hundreds of thousands of passengers stranded. But flyers can now resume their trips after authorities declared that the ash risks had receded.
The Soekarno-Hatta airport in Tangerang has been back from Tuesday (September 8) at 00.30 local time. Jakarta’s Halim Perdanakusuma Airport and Bandung’s Husein Sastranegara Airport also resumed operations shortly after.
“All airport service users are advised to reconfirm their flight status and schedule through their respective airlines prior to commencing their journey,” a travel advisory by Soekarno-Hatta Airport reads.
Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi has instructed airlines to thoroughly inspect the aircraft to make sure they are safe for flight.
"Airport operators must make sure that the runways and taxiways are clear of ash," Dudy told the press.
Mount Anak Krakatau began erupting late Friday, sending volcanic ash to other parts of the country, including the Greater Jakarta area. The government-run geological agency recently announced an end to Mount Anak Krakatau’s 25-hour continuous eruption episode.
