Jakarta Expands Car Free Day to Rasuna Said
Jakarta. Jakarta is expanding its Car Free Day (CFD) network to include the Rasuna Said–Kuningan corridor as part of efforts to widen access to pedestrian-friendly public spaces in the capital.
Governor Pramono Anung said the new route will complement the city’s long-established CFD area along Sudirman–MH Thamrin, which has become a major weekend destination for residents.
“The Car Free Day area will not only cover Sudirman–Thamrin, but also Rasuna Said,” Pramono told reporters after attending the inauguration of the Jakarta Youth and Sports Agency building on Friday.
The city administration is also planning to extend CFD operating hours. The program, currently held from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., will begin earlier at 5:30 a.m. under the revised schedule.
Rasuna Said will be the first corridor to trial the extended hours starting May 10, followed by Sudirman–Thamrin in a later phase. Pramono said the change is intended to give residents more time in car-free spaces while easing congestion in central business districts.
“However, I am planning for the Sudirman–Thamrin Car Free Day to start at 5:30 a.m. beginning in early June,” he said.
He added that preparations along the Rasuna Said corridor are expected to be completed by early June, ahead of Jakarta’s anniversary.
As part of the revitalization effort, the Jakarta government is also removing disused monorail pillars along Rasuna Said. The Jakarta Public Works Agency has dismantled 109 pillars so far.
The redevelopment plan includes expanded sidewalks, improved drainage, new parks, and additional green open spaces designed to make the corridor more pedestrian-friendly.
