New York. FIFA has introduced new, higher-priced tiers of tickets for this year’s World Cup, with prices reaching as high as $4,105 for a front “category 1” seat at the United States’ opening match against Paraguay in Inglewood, California, on June 12.

Last week, FIFA had set the top price for a standard category 1 ticket for the match at $2,735, but has since added the new “front category” pricing.

FIFA also quietly introduced a front category 2 tier on its ticket sales website, with prices ranging from $1,940 to $2,330 for the U.S. opener. The new categories were first reported Thursday by The Athletic.

The World Cup will be held from June 11 to July 19 across 16 cities in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

In its Sept. 9 “ticket products and categories” information, FIFA described category 1 as “the highest-priced seats, located primarily in the lower tier,” but it now appears some premium seats were excluded from that classification. Category 2 seats were described as “positioned outside of category 1 areas, available in both lower and upper tiers.”

FIFA did not respond to an email sent to its media office seeking comment.

For Canada’s opening match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 12 in Toronto, FIFA added front category 1 seats priced up to $3,360.

For round-of-16 matches, tickets priced at $905 were added in Philadelphia.

FIFA also raised the top ticket price for the World Cup final to $10,990 during a glitch-affected reopening of sales last week. The price had previously been $8,680 when tickets went on sale following the tournament draw in December.

Category 2 tickets for the July 19 final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, are now priced at $7,380, up from $5,575, while category 3 tickets have risen to $5,785 from $4,185.

As of Thursday, no tickets appeared to be available for the final on FIFA’s official ticketing website.
