Denpasar. A new hospitality destination in Bali’s coastal district of Sanur officially began operations on Wednesday, blending modern resort hospitality with traditional Balinese culture.

eL Hotel & Resort Bali–Sanur launched its phased opening with a ceremonial event held at the Garden Amphitheater within the resort complex in Sanur.

The opening began with a Melaspas ritual, a traditional Balinese purification ceremony performed before a newly built structure is fully used. The ceremony, which started at around 9 a.m. local time, is intended to cleanse the building and surrounding land, neutralize negative energies, and invoke harmony and protection for the space.

Following the ceremony, el Hotel founder Enggartiasto Lukita said the development of the resort was not solely driven by commercial considerations but also by a commitment to preserving Bali’s cultural heritage.

“We want to support Bali’s tourism industry while safeguarding the cultural values that distinguish Bali from other destinations,” Enggartiasto said. “Elements such as the use of the Balinese language in official events should not disappear. They must be preserved and nurtured.”

He added that the hotel’s management aims to integrate local cultural elements into its daily operations and guest services, allowing visitors not only to stay at the property but also to experience Bali’s cultural richness and traditional wisdom.

From a marketing perspective, the resort is targeting both domestic and international travelers. Domestic tourists remain the primary focus, Enggartiasto said, but the hotel will also tap into global markets through the broader eL Hotel network.

Operations will be rolled out gradually. In the initial phase, about 45% of the hotel’s rooms are available for guests. The figure is expected to increase to around 50–60% as construction of the front swimming pool is completed and several facilities are finalized.

Enggartiasto also noted that the hotel is a government-owned asset managed by the company through a formal tender process and operated in accordance with existing agreements and regulations. A grand launch is planned for April 13, 2026, with representatives from the Public Works Ministry — the asset owner — expected to attend.

Local officials expect the resort’s presence to contribute to Denpasar’s regional revenue and create employment opportunities for nearby communities, while enhancing Bali’s competitiveness as a global tourism destination.

I Gusti Ngurah Jaya Negara, the mayor of Denpasar, welcomed the resort’s opening and praised its contribution to the city’s development, noting the hotel’s earlier support in the recovery of Badung Market after a major fire.

He expressed hope that the resort would further strengthen Sanur’s identity as a distinctive tourism destination.

“I want Sanur to grow with its own identity,” Jaya Negara said. “Visitors should feel comfortable here and experience the unique character that makes Sanur different.”

He added that maintaining the beauty and cleanliness of Sanur Beach remains essential as one of Bali’s most recognizable tourism icons.
