Jakarta. The national campaign team of Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and his running mate Ma'ruf Amin announced on Wednesday that the number of votes the candidate pair had received in last month's presidential election exceeded 80 million, which is more than the required 50 percent of the estimated total to win.

The announcement was based on a calculation provided by the campaign team's "war room," staffed by more than 250 people, who have been gathering data from all polling stations across Indonesia and abroad.

With the announcement, the campaign team implicitly claimed victory for Jokowi-Ma'ruf.

A small celebration took place in the war room in Central Jakarta when the vote tally in favor of the candidate pair reached 80 million. National campaign team chairman Erick Tohir was present at the time.

There were 192.8 million voters registered for the 2019 presidential and legislative elections, according to the General Elections Commission (KPU), while the voter turnout was 80.9 percent, according to Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Wiranto.

That means approximately 156 million people voted in the April 17 elections.

"It is a physiological number that gives a presidential candidate the confidence of victory," political analyst Burhanudin Muhtadi told Metro TV.

The KPU, which is conducting the real count, had tabulated 72 percent of the ballots by Wednesday evening, with 56.18 percent in favor of Jokowi-Ma'ruf and 43.82 percent for rival pair Prabowo Subianto and Sandiaga Uno.

Erick said the internal real-count data is not an assumption but fact to be made public.

"We don't mean to be arrogant; this is part of the democratic process that we must guard, transparently and professionally," he said.

Erick expressed hope that the preliminary result in favor of Jokowi and Ma'ruf would encourage Prabowo, Sandiaga and other prominent political figures in Indonesia to reconcile and unite for the sake of the nation.

"I think it is very important, especially when we're in the holy month of Ramadan; let us, as fellow citizens, reunite … God willing, may the leaders of the nation, also Mr. Prabowo and Mr. Sandiaga, show the same willingness," he said.

Erick said the Prabowo-Sandiaga camp was welcome to visit the war room.

Prabowo previously claimed to have won 62 percent of the vote in the presidential election, but has yet to back it up with supporting data.

The former Army general has since made several statements claiming massive fraud in the election, which allegedly cost him victory.

On election day, several reputable pollsters announced quick-count results of between 54 percent and 56 percent of the vote in favor of Jokowi-Ma'ruf.

However, the Prabowo-Sandiaga camp refused to accept the quick-count results and urged the candidate pair's followers to not trust them.

Meanwhile, the KPU has a May 22 deadline to complete the real count in the country's first simultaneous presidential and legislative elections.

The Prabowo-Sandiaga camp has been attempting to delegitimize the official result by claiming that the election organizer made incorrect data entries.

But Minister Wiranto warned this week that any party attempting to delegitimize the result may fall foul of the law.
