Heavy Trucks Barred from Roads as Indonesia Manages Post-Eid Travel Surge
Jakarta. The Indonesian government has extended a temporary ban on heavy trucks until March 29 to ensure smoother traffic flow during the peak travel period surrounding the Eid al-Fitr holiday, the transportation minister said on Monday.
Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi said the restriction is aimed at supporting traffic conditions before, during, and after the holiday, as millions of people return to Greater Jakarta following the annual homecoming exodus.
The policy is formalized in a joint decree issued by the Transportation Ministry, the National Police, and the Public Works Ministry.
“Amid the return flow of Eid travelers, which is expected to occur in several waves, we urge logistics operators to comply with restrictions on freight vehicle operations,” Dudy said in Jakarta. “This measure is crucial to maintaining traffic flow and ensuring the safety of all road users.”
Traffic volumes toward Greater Jakarta are expected to rise sharply throughout the week as workers head back to the capital and surrounding areas.
Dudy said compliance with the regulation is part of a broader effort to ensure safe, orderly, and efficient mobility during the post-holiday travel period.
He also expressed appreciation to logistics companies that have adhered to the restrictions, as well as to police officers who have overseen and enforced the policy on the ground.
“This strong coordination is essential to maintaining traffic flow and public safety, so that mobility during the return period can proceed safely, orderly, and smoothly,” he said.
