Return Flow to Greater Jakarta Intensifies After Eid Holiday
Jakarta. The return flow of travelers to Greater Jakarta began to intensify on Monday, two days after Eid al-Fitr, with rising volumes recorded across land, sea, and air transport routes.
Traffic increases were observed at key entry points, including toll roads in West Java, Bakauheni Port in Sumatra, and Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, signaling the end of the main holiday period.
On land routes, toll operator Jasa Marga reported that nearly 75,000 vehicles departed from Bandung and Rancaekek toward Jakarta via the Cileunyi and Pasteur toll gates — a 10.19% increase compared with normal traffic levels.
Widiyatmiko Nursejati, senior general manager of Jasamarga Metropolitan, said the rise reflects a combination of early return travel and ongoing tourism activity, which is expected to remain elevated in the coming days.
Jasa Marga projected further increases in traffic volumes across Bandung and the Greater Jakarta area on Tuesday, urging motorists to prepare their journeys carefully, including ensuring vehicle readiness, driver fitness, sufficient fuel, and adequate toll payment balances.
The company forecasts peak return traffic on March 24, as well as on March 28 and 29.
Sea Routes
In Sumatra, Bakauheni Port began experiencing congestion from Monday evening, with vehicle crossings to Java rising 36% year-on-year to 5,437 units by midday.
Passenger numbers also climbed 33% annually to 20,915, with private cars dominating queues at ferry terminals ahead of the first peak wave expected on Tuesday.
Authorities at the port remain on high alert to ensure smooth operations, particularly during nighttime hours when traffic is expected to intensify further.
Air Travel
A similar trend was observed at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, where operator Angkasa Pura Indonesia projected 175,263 passengers passing through Terminals 1, 2, and 3 on Monday, including 91,670 arrivals.
Crowding was particularly evident at the domestic arrivals area in Terminal 3, with most passengers arriving from Medan, Padang, Palembang, and Surabaya.
One traveler from Medan, Sintia, said she chose to return early to avoid peak congestion and prepare for work.
“I’m heading to Tangerang after spending 10 days back home in Medan. I decided to return now because I’ll be going back to work soon,” she said.
She added that ticket prices for her Medan–Tangerang flight had increased slightly to around Rp 1.5 million from the usual Rp 1.3 million, but demand for air travel remained strong, with 1,101 flight movements recorded for the day.
