Destry Damayanti Set to Become Bank Indonesia’s First Female Governor
Jakarta. Destry Damayanti is set to make history as the first woman to definitively lead Bank Indonesia after the House of Representatives (DPR) approved her appointment as the central bank's governor for the 2026–2031 term.
The House's Commission XI approved Destry alongside Aida S. Budiman as senior deputy governor and Solikin M. Juhro as deputy governor. The appointments were subsequently endorsed at a plenary session on Tuesday.
Destry will replace Perry Warjiyo, who stepped down as Bank Indonesia governor on July 25, 2026. Having served as senior deputy governor since 2019, Destry had been acting as interim governor before President Prabowo Subianto nominated her as the sole candidate for the top post.
Perry congratulated Destry, Aida, and Solikin, while urging the new Board of Governors to safeguard stability and support sustainable economic growth amid continued global uncertainty.
“I hope the new Board of Governors will strengthen Bank Indonesia's mandate to maintain stability while also supporting sustainable economic growth amid the continuing global turbulence,” Perry said in a personal statement received by Investor Daily on Tuesday.
He also thanked those who had placed their trust in him during his tenure at the central bank.
“I would also like to express my deepest gratitude for the trust placed in me throughout my service in carrying out Bank Indonesia's duties in accordance with the law and applicable regulations,” Perry said.
Destry said her first priority after being officially appointed and sworn in by President Prabowo would be to convene the entire Board of Governors and review the division of responsibilities.
“We certainly need to sit down together first with the full Board of Governors and determine the division of responsibilities,” Destry told reporters at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Tuesday.
She said each board member would be assigned a specific policy area and asked to provide updates on their respective responsibilities, covering areas such as monetary policy, macroprudential policy, and financial market development.
“For example, we need to determine who will oversee monetary policy, who will handle macroprudential policy, who will be responsible for financial market deepening, and so on,” she said.
Destry added that the division of responsibilities could be rotated every two years.
“That will be one of the first things we do so that our work and responsibilities can immediately move forward with greater clarity,” she said.
Destry, who was born in Jakarta in 1963, joined Bank Indonesia after a career spanning the financial sector and public institutions. Before entering the central bank, she served as chief economist at Mandiri Sekuritas and Bank Mandiri and was also a member of the Indonesia Deposit Insurance Corporation's board of commissioners.
She became Bank Indonesia's senior deputy governor in 2019 and was reappointed for a second term in 2024. Now, after around seven years in the central bank's top ranks, Destry will take over Bank Indonesia at a time when policymakers continue to navigate global volatility while maintaining price and financial stability and supporting sustainable growth.
