Rupiah Breaches Rp 18,000 per Dollar on Tuesday as US Yields Pressure Emerging Markets
Jakarta. Rupiah breached the psychologically significant Rp 18,000 per US dollar level on Tuesday morning as a stronger greenback and elevated US yields continued to pressure emerging-market currencies.
Bloomberg data showed the rupiah weakening 24 points, or 0.13%, to Rp 18,002 per dollar in the spot market as of 9:40 a.m. Jakarta time.
Other Asian currencies posted mixed movements against the dollar. The Japanese yen gained 0.03%, while the Singapore dollar fell 0.04% and the Thai baht declined 0.05%. The Chinese yuan rose 0.09% and the Philippine peso strengthened 0.20%.
Elsewhere, the South Korean won appreciated 0.09% and the Hong Kong dollar edged up 0.01%. The Indian rupee weakened 0.17%, while the Malaysian ringgit slipped 0.01%.
Bank Indonesia (BI) Governor Destry Damayanti told the House of Representatives' Commission XI during a working meeting at the parliament complex in Jakarta on Monday that pressure on the rupiah stemmed from global conditions, shifts in capital flows and weaknesses in Indonesia's external-sector fundamentals.
Global pressures have intensified amid a stronger US dollar and elevated yields on US assets. These conditions make investments in developed markets more attractive, potentially diverting capital away from emerging economies such as Indonesia.
The rupiah is also facing pressure from the global higher-for-longer interest rate environment, in which borrowing costs remain elevated for an extended period. This increases the risk of capital outflows from emerging markets as investors shift toward assets in developed economies.
