Netflix, Shopee Self-Assessed for Child Social Media Curbs
Jakarta. Popular digital platforms such as Netflix and Shopee have completed their self-assessments to comply with Indonesia’s social media curbs.
Indonesia is placing a ban on social media and other popular digital platforms for kids under 16 years old.
These restrictions have already kicked in late March. The government now requires all digital platforms to submit self-assessments of their services, features, and products. The latter must check whether their platforms contain risks of pornography and violence exposure, parental control features, and content moderation mechanisms. The government will then go through its reports before assigning the risk category to the respective platforms.
“We have received the self-assessment reports of 175 features from 64 digital platforms,” Communications Minister Meutya Hafid said on Tuesday, as reported by the state news agency Antara.
They include popular TV show streaming platforms such as Netflix, Vidio, HBO Max, and Disney+. The same goes for games such as Roblox, PUBG Online, Valorant, and Mobile Legends.
The list also encompasses online marketplaces (Shopee, Tokopedia, Lazada, and TikTok Shop) as well as digital payment systems (Dana, GoPay, and Flip.id). The artificial intelligence-backed chatbot ChatGPT and ride-hailing app Grab have also submitted their reports.
Those who fail to present their self-assessments will automatically get assigned as a high-risk platform, according to Meutya.
