Jakarta. State-owned oil company Pertamina recently won two awards that recognized their commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles.

The awards, which they had won at the 2024 Investor Daily ESG Appreciation Night, came not long after Pertamina became the world’s number one on the global ESG risk rating for the category of integrated oil and gas sub-industry.

Pertamina’s acting senior vice president Suripno said that the company was ambitious in implementing ESG principles, which they thought could boost business and operations. To this end, the company implemented 10 “sustainability focuses” across its operations. Suripno said that this commitment enabled Pertamina to score the highest among 61 global oil and gas companies, according to ESG rating firm Sustainalytics.

“Pertamina got a rating of 20.7, which is the world’s best for an ESG rating in the integrated oil and gas category,” Suripno said.

According to Suripno, the aforementioned “10 sustainability focuses” encompasses Pertamina’s commitment to address climate change, reduce the environmental footprint from energy consumption, and biodiversity protection, among others. Pertamina also seeks to prevent major accidents and enhance health and safety. Other focuses include employee development and retention, innovation and research, community engagement, cybersecurity, and corporate ethics. Pertamina then translated these focuses into annual, regular programs which they implement across its operations, including its holding, sub-holdings, and subsidiaries.

“We wish to remain ambitious in implementing these ESG principles as an energy firm. We wish to decarbonize to achieve net zero emissions by 2060 or sooner. We also have an interim target for the year 2030,” Suripno said.
