Pertamina, Jababeka Plan Biomethane and Hydrogen Expansion for Industrial Decarbonization
Cikarang, W. Java. State-owned energy company Pertamina and industrial estate developer Jababeka (KIJA) are expanding cooperation on clean energy supplies, including biomethane, solar power, and hydrogen, as companies in one of Indonesia’s largest manufacturing hubs pursue decarbonization.
The partnership will focus on providing green energy to businesses operating in the Jababeka Industrial Estate in Cikarang, Bekasi, while exploring waste-to-energy solutions and hydrogen-powered transportation, Pertamina and Jababeka executives said at a sustainability seminar on Friday.
Pertamina Director of Transformation and Business Sustainability Agung Wicaksono said the collaboration would expand beyond existing renewable energy projects, with hydrogen, biomethane and geothermal energy among the alternatives being explored from 2027.
“Entering 2027, we will focus on developing other green energy alternatives, such as hydrogen, biomethane, and geothermal potential,” Agung said during the seminar, titled Energy Resilience and Sustainability Through Energy Transition: Towards Net Zero Industrial Estate with Energy Security.
The event was organized by the Jababeka Net Zero Industrial Cluster Community (NZICC) and Pertamina at Java Palace Hotel in Cikarang.
The planned cooperation includes the use of piped gas, ISCC-certified biomethane produced from organic waste, rooftop solar panels, battery energy storage systems, and carbon credits.
The companies will also explore green hydrogen for low-carbon transportation within a transit-oriented development (TOD) concept, according to the release.
Pertamina, through its subsidiaries Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN) and Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE), will support tenants in reducing emissions, including through waste-to-energy projects and the conversion of waste-derived gas into hydrogen for industrial and transport applications.
Agung cited Unilever's development of biomethane with PGN and automotive component manufacturer Astemo's expansion of rooftop solar capacity as examples of tenant-led decarbonization efforts.
Jababeka Infrastructure President Director Didik Purbadi said the industrial estate currently hosts around 2,000 multinational companies from 36 countries.
Jababeka's partnership with Pertamina NRE includes a 230-kilowatt-peak rooftop solar installation at the estate's water treatment plant, which began operating in 2023.
According to the company, the installation has generated 858.21 megawatt-hours of electricity and reduced emissions by 734 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.
As of September 2026, 23 companies in the industrial estate had installed rooftop solar systems with a combined capacity of 14.5 megawatt-peak.
The cooperation between Jababeka and Pertamina was initiated in 2022 and is now shifting its focus toward green energy provision for industrial tenants, the companies said.
