Jakarta. Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) has been ranked among Indonesia’s top five private universities in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE WUR) 2027, placing in the 1,801–2,000 band globally in the rankings released in September 2026.

The THE WUR 2027 assessed 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories using 17 indicators grouped into five pillars: Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, International Outlook and Industry.

UPH Rector Jonathan L. Parapak said the recognition reflected the university’s continued efforts to improve the quality of education, research, international partnerships and industry relations.

“Glory be to God for UPH’s achievement in THE WUR 2027. This achievement recognizes our efforts to continuously improve the quality of education, research, international cooperation and industry relations. However, rankings are not the ultimate goal for UPH. What matters most is how the quality we build benefits students and society, while producing knowledge and graduates capable of making an impact,” Jonathan said.

Assessing Universities Across Five Pillars
THE WUR 2027 evaluates university performance across five pillars to provide a comprehensive assessment of academic quality and competitiveness.

The Teaching pillar covers teaching reputation, student-to-staff ratio, doctoral-to-bachelor’s ratio, the proportion of staff holding doctoral degrees and institutional income.

Research Environment assesses a university’s research reputation, research income and research productivity. Meanwhile, Research Quality measures the quality and influence of research through citation impact, research strength, research excellence and research influence.

The International Outlook pillar evaluates a university’s global connections through its international student and staff populations, as well as international research collaboration. The Industry pillar measures links with the business sector through industry income and patents.

Research Quality Among UPH’s Strongest Areas
Among the five pillars, Research Quality was one of UPH’s strongest areas, with a score of 27.4. The university also scored 22.4 for International Outlook and 21.5 for Industry, while Teaching scored 21.1 and Research Environment 12.4. UPH’s overall score in THE WUR 2027 was reported in the range of 20.4–24.1.

The results reflect UPH’s efforts to strengthen the quality and relevance of its research by improving the capabilities of lecturers and researchers, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and expanding partnerships with domestic and international institutions.

Research at the university is not limited to academic publications but is also directed toward addressing real-world challenges and contributing to scientific advancement and society.

In International Outlook, UPH continues to expand partnerships and collaboration with international institutions through scholarship programs, academic exchanges and joint research. The university is also developing international classes and increasing opportunities for students to participate in exchange programs.

These initiatives aim to strengthen UPH’s global outlook while fostering a more diverse academic community with broader international perspectives.

The university’s Industry pillar reflects its commitment to aligning education and research with the needs of society and the workplace. Industry partnerships give students practical experience, help lecturers stay abreast of professional developments and enable the university to develop research and innovations that address real-world needs.

UPH currently has more than 600 strategic partnerships with universities and industry players at both national and international levels.

In Teaching, UPH ensures that academic programs are designed around the competencies graduates need. This approach aims to help students meet established graduate profiles and learning outcomes while gaining an educational experience tailored to their chosen fields of study.

The university also adjusts program concentrations to reflect market needs, strengthen the competitiveness of individual study programs and support student recruitment. It maintains an optimal student-to-lecturer ratio to ensure effective and focused learning.

To strengthen its Research Environment, UPH encourages its academic community to increase research productivity. Through its Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM), the university provides incentives for research publications, with higher incentives for papers published in international journals.

UPH also encourages lecturers and researchers to apply for national and international research grants. LPPM supports these efforts by facilitating access to research networks, funding opportunities and relevant collaboration initiatives.

These initiatives form part of UPH’s ongoing efforts to strengthen education and research. For the university, rankings serve not as an end in themselves but as a reflection of its continued work to deliver academic quality that benefits students and society through education, research and its graduates.

Grounded in the Reformed Christian Worldview, UPH views education as more than equipping students with knowledge and academic competencies. It also emphasizes character formation, integrity, service and faith that can bring transformation to people's lives. Through holistic education and various personal development programs, UPH aims to prepare future leaders who fear God, demonstrate professionalism and make a positive impact on society, the nation and the world.
