UPH Graduates More Than 4,000 Students, Awards Honorary Doctorate to Papua Education Pioneer
Tangerang. Pelita Harapan University (UPH) reaffirmed its commitment to delivering quality education and developing graduates who are adaptive, impactful, and professionally prepared during its Odd Semester Commencement Ceremony for the 2025/2026 Academic Year.
Held on May 7–8, 2026, at the Grand Chapel Auditorium, UPH Lippo Village campus in Karawaci, Tangerang, the ceremony officially graduated 4,469 students from doctoral, master’s, bachelor’s, and diploma programs.
Carrying the theme “For I Know to Whom I Have Believed,” this year’s commencement highlighted the university’s belief that success is not measured solely by academic achievement, but also by faith, integrity, and resilience in navigating an ever-changing world.
In his opening remarks, UPH Rector Jonathan L. Parapak expressed gratitude for the students’ achievements and emphasized that education at UPH goes beyond academics.
“Today, we commission you to become leaders and a blessing to society,” he said.
Meanwhile, James T. Riady, founder of the Pelita Harapan Education Foundation (YPPH), shared reflections on the meaning of success, purpose, and the challenges faced by today’s generation.
He reminded graduates that while they are entering a world driven by ambition and achievement, life cannot be built on intellect and knowledge alone. According to him, a strong foundation of faith and conviction is equally essential.
Dr. James also addressed the rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and technological disruption, encouraging graduates to respond wisely to these developments while recognizing that technology can never replace wisdom and character.
“I hope you leave with two things: unwavering conviction and critical thinking skills. Without them, you can easily be shaped by something other than truth,” he said. “True success is measured by the positive impact we create for society.”
The commencement ceremony was also attended by Henri Togar Hasiholan Tambunan, head of the Higher Education Service Institution (LLDikti) Region III, who emphasized the Indonesian government’s “Impactful Higher Education” policy direction.
He said universities are expected to produce research, innovation, and graduates capable of delivering real-world solutions to modern challenges.
“Artificial intelligence and automation may transform how we work, but creativity, empathy, and leadership with integrity can never be replaced by machines,” he said.
Honorary Doctorate for Papua Education Pioneer
A major highlight of this year’s graduation ceremony was the awarding of an honorary doctorate in management to Wallace Wiley, affectionately known as Wally, in recognition of his decades-long dedication to expanding educational access in Papua.
For nearly 50 years, the 78-year-old educator has devoted his life to serving communities in Jayapura Regency, Papua. His journey began through his work with Mission Aviation Fellowship, where he recognized the lack of indigenous Papuan professionals in aviation and later established schools to address broader educational needs.
In 2019, Wiley officially became an Indonesian citizen as a demonstration of his long-term commitment to serving Papua through education. To date, more than 17 schools, ranging from kindergarten to senior high school, have been established through his efforts.
The honorary degree was conferred directly by Rector Jonathan Parapak alongside Stephanie Riady, President of UPH and Executive Director of Pelita Harapan Group.
Dr. Stephanie described Wiley’s life as a powerful example of leadership rooted in faith and service.
“Your life demonstrates that leadership born from calling and faith can bring transformation even in the most difficult circumstances,” she said.
In his acceptance speech, Wiley reflected on his upbringing in a missionary family in Mexico and his journey toward discovering a deeper sense of purpose.
“At one point, I pursued what the world often defines as success — wealth, fame, power, and pleasure,” he said. “But I realized true peace was reflected in my father’s simple life of service.”
He stressed that the honorary degree was not a recognition of personal accomplishment, but rather a testament to God’s grace and the people who had supported his journey.
“When God asks, ‘What do you have?’ whatever it may be — education, skills, or opportunities — surrender it to Him and let Him guide your steps,” Wiley told graduates.
Diverse Graduates Reflect Lifelong Learning
UPH’s 2026 graduation ceremony also reflected the diversity of its student body, which included public figures, professionals, and members of state institutions.
Among the graduates was Indonesian actress and public figure Mawar Eva de Jongh, who earned a degree in Communication Science through UPH’s distance learning program.
Despite her demanding schedule in the entertainment industry, Mawar successfully balanced her studies with her professional career.
“At UPH, I not only deepened my understanding of communication science, but also grew personally and spiritually,” she said. “To everyone still studying or working in the entertainment industry, don’t give up. Stay focused on your goals and believe that you can achieve them.”
The ceremony also included graduates from the Indonesian National Police, reflecting UPH’s collaboration with the institution, as well as working professionals from various backgrounds.
Among them was Evy Harjono, a graduate of UPH’s employee-class law program and wife of former Indonesian Minister of Law and Human Rights Amir Syamsudin.
Recognizing Outstanding Achievement
UPH also honored graduates with exceptional academic and non-academic achievements during the commencement ceremony.
Among the award recipients were:
- Donny Setiawan — Highest GPA in the Doctoral Program (Law, Magna Cum Laude, GPA 3.94)
- Alexander Panggabean — Highest GPA in the Master’s Program (Informatics, Summa Cum Laude, GPA 4.00)
- Gabriel Alvaro — Highest GPA in the Master’s Program (Informatics, Summa Cum Laude, GPA 4.00)

- Lisa — Highest GPA in the Bachelor’s Program (Accounting, Summa Cum Laude, GPA 3.97)

Through this year’s commencement, UPH reaffirmed its mission to provide holistic education that develops not only academic excellence, but also leadership, integrity, and a commitment to serving society.
