Freeport Indonesia Marks 81st Independence Day With ‘One Freeport’ Spirit
Tembagapura, Papua. PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) marked Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day with simultaneous Red and White flag-raising ceremonies at six of its work sites across three provinces, highlighting its “One Freeport: Rising Together from Eastern Indonesia” spirit.
The ceremonies were held in Central Papua, East Java and Jakarta, bringing together PTFI employees and management from its mining operations in Tembagapura and Kuala Kencana in Mimika, its representative office in Nabire, its smelter operations in Gresik, and its Jakarta office.
PTFI President Director Tony Wenas served as the ceremony inspector at the soccer field in Tembagapura, with employees and management at the other locations joining the ceremony simultaneously.
The simultaneous ceremonies symbolized the unity of PTFI’s workforce across its operations, from upstream mining activities in Papua to downstream processing facilities in Gresik.
The national Independence Day theme this year was “Sovereign, Just and Prosperous Indonesia,” while PTFI adopted the sub-theme “One Freeport: Rising Together from Eastern Indonesia.”
Tony said the spirit of rising together was reflected in the company’s ongoing efforts to restore its underground mining operations while maintaining its commitment to contributing to Indonesia.
“Freeport Indonesia must emerge stronger. With a spirit of togetherness, resilience and an unwavering commitment to safety, I am confident that we can overcome this period and move toward a better future for the company, our employees, communities, stakeholders and the nation,” Tony said.
53 years of Independence Day ceremonies
This year’s Independence Day celebration holds particular significance for PTFI. Since it began operations in 1973, the company has held an annual Red and White flag-raising ceremony to honor Indonesia’s national heroes and reaffirm its commitment as part of the country.
Now in its 53rd year, the ceremony also served as a moment to reinforce unity and gotong royong, or mutual cooperation, among PTFI’s workforce.
Tony said the spirit of unity was strengthened by the diversity of PTFI’s more than 30,000 employees, who come from different regions, ethnic groups, religions and cultural backgrounds across Indonesia.
“This diversity is our strength. With people from across Indonesia, from Sabang to Merauke and from Miangas to Rote, we have faced many challenges. With God’s help, rather than being divided, we have grown closer and stronger as one big family — One Freeport,” he said.
Production recovery
As PTFI continues to recover its operations, the company said several milestones demonstrate its commitment to investing and growing alongside Indonesia over the long term.
Tony said production capacity is projected to reach around 65 percent by the end of the second half of this year, supported by the efforts of employees and stakeholders.
PTFI is targeting production of around 800 million pounds of copper and 700,000 ounces of gold.
Production capacity is expected to rise to around 75 percent by mid-2027 and gradually approach full capacity by the end of 2027, Tony said.
The recovery is important not only to the sustainability of PTFI’s operations but also to its contribution to the Indonesian state.
In 2025, PTFI contributed Rp75 trillion ($4.2 billion) to the state, including around Rp13 trillion allocated to the Mimika administration, Central Papua province and other districts in Central Papua, according to the company.
“These contributions reflect our unwavering commitment to delivering tangible benefits to the country and communities despite the challenges we face,” Tony said.
He added that once PTFI reaches full production capacity, its annual contribution to the state is expected to exceed Rp100 trillion.
Commitment to sustainable growth
For PTFI, the spirit of rising together is closely linked to its SINCERE values: Safety, Integrity, Commitment, Respect and Excellence.
Through its “One Freeport: Rising Together from Eastern Indonesia” commitment, the company said it will continue to grow alongside communities and deliver sustainable benefits for current and future generations.
“Amid all the challenges we face today, from Tembagapura I say: From Eastern Indonesia, from the land of Papua for Indonesia, Freeport rises,” Tony said.
