Jakarta. A woman died after being struck by a long-distance passenger train at Gondangdia Station in Central Jakarta on Wednesday afternoon, Indonesian railway operator KAI Commuter said, confirming that the victim deliberately jumped onto the tracks.

The incident involved the Gajayana train, which operates on the Malang–Gambir route, and occurred at around 5:50 p.m. Jakarta time on Platform 1 of Gondangdia Station, a busy commuter hub in the capital.

KAI Commuter Vice President for Corporate Secretary Karina Amanda said the incident was not the result of an accidental fall. Based on observations by station personnel on duty at the time, the woman intentionally entered the railway track as the long-distance train was passing through the station.

“Security officers stationed on Platform 1 witnessed a passenger committing a dangerous act by jumping onto the track while a long-distance train was passing,” Karina said in a statement on Thursday.

Station officers immediately secured the area and began emergency response procedures. The victim received initial medical treatment at the station’s health post before being transported by ambulance to PGI Cikini Hospital in Central Jakarta.

Despite medical efforts, the woman was pronounced dead due to the severity of her injuries. KAI Commuter said the victim was a Jakarta resident. Her identity has not been publicly released.

According to the company, the victim’s family was present at the station during the initial response and accompanied her throughout the evacuation process to the hospital.

Following the incident, station authorities coordinated with relevant agencies to restore normal conditions and ensure train operations continued in accordance with safety protocols. KAI Commuter said there was no prolonged disruption to rail services.

The operator reiterated that passenger safety remains its top priority and urged all rail users to strictly follow safety regulations while at stations. These include staying behind the designated safety lines on platforms and complying with instructions from railway staff.
