Weather Agency Warns of Strong Solar Storm Affecting Indonesia for Three Days
Jakarta. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has detected a strong solar storm affecting Indonesia over the next three days and is urging caution due to its potential impacts.
Syrojudin, Head of BMKG's Geophysical Potential Team, said on Friday that the storm is classified at a severe G4 index, which indicates significant effects on power systems, satellite operations, and navigation systems. The storm is expected to last from Oct. 11 to 13.
“The peak of the storm begins today, Friday,” Syrojudin stated.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a solar explosion on Monday, Oct. 7, triggered a G4-level geomagnetic storm on Earth. The explosion was a massive burst of electromagnetic radiation from the sun lasting for several minutes to hours.
BMKG’s geophysical team analysis revealed that Indonesia could experience disruptions to internet networks, particularly those relying on satellite systems like Starlink.
Syrojudin advised the public to exercise caution when conducting activities or transactions that depend on internet or radio-based communications during the solar storm period.
Additionally, drone pilots across Indonesia are advised not to operate their unmanned aircraft, as they may lose control. Satellite-based positioning systems, such as GPS, are also expected to experience reduced accuracy.
BMKG will provide continuous updates on the solar storm, offering accurate observations and analyses to ensure public safety in daily activities.
