6.4-Magnitude Earthquake Injures 15, Damages Buildings in Yogyakarta
Bantul, Yogyakarta. A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck southern Java early Friday, injuring at least 15 people and damaging dozens of buildings across Yogyakarta, local authorities said.
The quake was centered south of Pacitan in East Java and was felt as far as Bantul Regency in Yogyakarta, according to Indonesia’s weather agency, Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). The tremor occurred at 1:06 a.m. local time.
The Bantul Disaster Mitigation Agency said preliminary assessments recorded damage at 13 locations across the regency.
“Initial reports received by our office show structural damage and injuries in several areas,” said Mujahid Amrudin, head of the Bantul disaster agency.
He said the quake damaged seven homes, two places of worship, one government office, two schools, and a clinic.
Authorities also confirmed 15 people suffered injuries. All victims have received medical treatment and were referred to nearby hospitals.
“Our current focus is on assisting the injured, assessing damage in the field, and monitoring the potential for aftershocks,” Mujahid said.
