W. Jakarta Immigration Chief Detained in Probe Into Foreign Residency Permit Corruption
Jakarta. The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has detained the head of the West Jakarta Immigration Office and several other individuals as part of an investigation into alleged corruption involving the issuance of residency permits for foreign nationals.
West Jakarta Immigration Office chief Ronald Arman Abdul was taken into custody on Tuesday night, according to KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo.
Budi said the investigation remains in its preliminary stage and that no suspects have been formally named.
“We are still examining the structure of the case. Whether it involves bribery, extortion, or another offense will be determined as the investigation progresses, and we will provide details later,” Budi told reporters at KPK headquarters in Jakarta on Wednesday.
He said investigators are continuing to question Ronald and several other individuals who were temporarily detained, but declined to disclose their identities or the total number of people involved.
“The team is still operating in the field. We will continue to provide updates, including details regarding evidence that has been secured,” Budi said.
According to the KPK, the operation is related to the processing of immigration documents required for foreign nationals residing in Indonesia, including limited stay permits (KITAS), which are generally valid for up to two years, and permanent stay permits (KITAP), which are valid for five years and may be extended.
“This operation is related to the process of obtaining documents that allow foreign nationals to reside in Indonesia. As we know, foreign citizens must possess a KITAS or KITAP to stay in Indonesia. The investigation concerns the process of obtaining those documents,” Budi said.
The KPK has not yet disclosed the alleged losses involved, the period under investigation, or whether additional arrests are expected as the probe continues.
