Deputy Immigration Minister Silmy Karim Detained in Foreign Residency Permit Corruption Case
Jakarta. The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Thursday detained Deputy Immigration and Corrections Minister Silmy Karim and named him a suspect in an alleged corruption case involving the processing of residency permits for foreign nationals.
Silmy was seen leaving KPK headquarters in South Jakarta wearing a detainee vest and handcuffs while escorted by officers to a detention vehicle.
The anti-graft agency also named eight other individuals as suspects in the case, including former Immigration Director General Saffar Godam, West Java regional immigration office chief Jaya Saputra, and West Jakarta Immigration Office head Ronald Arman Abdullah.
Four additional suspects are officials and employees within the Directorate General of Immigration who are alleged to have been involved in the scheme.
The investigation is an expansion of an earlier KPK operation conducted on Tuesday.
On Wednesday night, Silmy arrived at KPK headquarters and surrendered himself after the agency announced that he had been placed on a wanted list.
Before becoming deputy minister, Silmy served as Indonesia’s director general of immigration from January 2023 until October 2024.
Authorities allege the case is connected to corruption in the processing of residency documents for foreign nationals seeking to stay in Indonesia, including limited stay permits (KITAS) and permanent stay permits (KITAP).
The KPK has not yet disclosed the total alleged state losses or the full details of the corruption scheme, while the investigation continues.
