Jakarta. Prosecutors have searched the headquarters of technology giant GoTo Gojek Tokopedia and seized documents as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged corruption surrounding the government’s Chromebook laptop procurement program, worth nearly Rp 10 trillion ($613 million), the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) announced on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, former Education Minister Nadiem Makarim was questioned for a second time as a witness in the case. Nadiem, who co-founded ride-hailing company Gojek before its merger with e-commerce platform Tokopedia, is not named as a suspect but remains under scrutiny.

Two days prior, prosecutors also interrogated former GoTo CEO Andre Soelistyo and former Tokopedia CEO Melissa Siska Juminto in connection with the case. Melissa now serves as e-commerce director at ByteDance, the Chinese tech firm behind TikTok.

“We have conducted a search and seized documents from GoTo,” AGO spokesman Anang Supriatna confirmed in Jakarta.

According to investigators, the laptop procurement program was allegedly planned by Nadiem and his close associates even before he officially became education minister in December 2019.

Abdul Qohar, the AGO’s director of corruption investigation, said Nadiem had created a WhatsApp group in August 2019 with his colleagues to discuss the ministry’s digitalization project. After his appointment as minister, Nadiem reportedly fast-tracked the program, which involved procuring 1.2 million Chromebook laptops between 2020 and 2022 for students from kindergarten to high school in Indonesia’s remote regions.

The procurement was spearheaded by Nadiem’s special advisor, Jurist Tan, and independent tech consultant Ibrahim Arief. Both men have been named suspects in the case, along with two former Education Ministry officials.

Prosecutors said the Chromebooks ultimately proved unsuitable for the ministry’s school digitalization efforts. The devices require an internet connection to function, rendering them practically useless in remote areas with unreliable electricity and limited internet access.

The state audit agency estimates the program caused nearly Rp 2 trillion ($122.7 million) in state losses.

The two additional suspects identified in the case are Mulyatsyah, former director of the ministry’s junior high school division, and Sri Wahyuningsih, former director of the elementary school division.
