Jakarta. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said that the traffic in the capital had significantly improved thanks to a series of initiatives, including mandating civil servants to take public transportation.

Jakarta is often synonymous with traffic jams. According to the 2024 TomTom Traffic Index, Indonesia has dropped to fifth place nationally, just behind Bandung, Medan, Surabaya, and Palembang. West Java's capital Bandung has taken over Jakarta's spot as the Indonesian city with the worst traffic. Pramono talked of what had Jakarta done to improve the city's travel time at the 2025 Beritasatu Regional Forum in Jakarta.

"We used to be among the world's 20 most congested cities. Our ranks have now dropped to 90th place," Pramono told the 2025 Beritasatu Regional Forum in Jakarta on Wednesday, alluding to the TomTom Traffic Index.

Pramono attributed the improved traffic time to the provincial government subsidies for the Transjakarta bus system. Passengers only need to pay a low Rp 3,500 ($0.21) to ride the bus with stops spread across the city. People residing in other parts of the Greater Jakarta area -- Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi -- also use this affordable massive transportation system. The Jakarta provincial government has also mandated its employees to use public transportation every Wednesday.

He went on to say that improving travel time "can open up new opportunities."

Transjakarta's daily ridership, which reaches over 1 million, provides added commercial value, according to Pramono. For instance, radios offer an opportunity for mass transportation advertising. Despite the financial burden borne by the Jakarta regional budget, Pramono admitted that the Transjakarta transportation could widely benefit the people.

The 2024 TomTom Traffic Index shows that drivers spend 25 minutes and 31 seconds on the road to travel 10 kilometers. They also lose 108 hours each year at rush hours. For comparison, it takes 32 minutes and 37 seconds to travel 10 kilometers in Bandung. The city's time lost at rush hours also stand at 108 hours.
