Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto officially replaced Finance Minister Sri Mulyani with Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, who used to lead the Indonesian Deposit Insurance Agency (LPS), on Monday.

The latest cabinet shake-up also saw Chief Security Minister and ex-policeman Budi Gunawan leaving the cabinet. The same goes for Sports Minister Dito Ariotedjo. Their successors are yet to be announced.

Prabowo removed Budi Arie Setiadi -- a leading member of his predecessor Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's campaign team -- from the cooperatives ministry's top position. Budi's second-in-command Ferry Joko Juliantono took over his ministerial role. Prabowo now has lawmaker Mukhtarudin as his migrant worker protection minister, replacing Abdul Kadir Karding.

The Indonesian leader also officially established the Hajj Ministry with Mochamad Irfan Yusuf as its helm.  Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak becomes the deputy minister for hajj affairs. Both originally came from the government-owned hajj-organizing body. Indonesia -- the world’s largest Muslim-majority country -- sent 221,000 pilgrims on Hajj this year, thus highlighting the need for a dedicated ministry.

Dito had uploaded a farewell message on social media earlier that day.

“Thank you to everyone who has walked [with me] together to create changes in [Indonesia’s] youth and sports affairs. Hopefully, the successor will carry on the torch,” Dito said.

According to State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, Prabowo made the decision to make major changes to his cabinet “after much deliberation”.

"The reshuffle is based on various developments, input, and consistent evaluations by the president," Prasetyo told reporters.

Sri Mulyani has long been subject to resignation rumors, which escalated following the nationwide protests over economic inequality. The minister even had her house looted. Sri Mulyani had apologized on social media. However, she also told the public to take things to the Constitutional Court or Supreme Court instead of resorting to violence if they are unsatisfied with the government.
