Prabowo Orders Acceleration of Waste-to-Energy Projects Across Cities
Bogor. President Prabowo Subianto on Wednesday instructed ministers to accelerate the rollout of waste-to-energy projects aimed at converting urban waste into electricity across major Indonesian cities.
The initiative is being led by sovereign wealth fund Danantara, with projects planned in Jakarta, Bekasi, Tangerang, Bogor, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, Medan and Denpasar.
Danantara Chief Executive Rosan Roeslani, who also serves as investment minister, attended the meeting at the president’s private residence in Bogor, alongside State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia, Higher Education, Science and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto, and Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman.
“President Prabowo wants the central government to immediately address long-unmanaged waste and convert it into energy, particularly electricity,” Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said in a statement.
Danantara recently appointed Chinese firms Zhejiang Weiming Environment Protection and Wangneng Environment to develop waste-to-energy projects in Bekasi, Bogor, and Denpasar.
Indonesia plans to build waste-to-energy incineration facilities in 34 cities nationwide, with total investment estimated at around $5 billion. Construction for the first phase is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2026, with completion targeted for the fourth quarter of 2027.
