One Arrested, Six Foreign Suspects Flee in Bali Kidnapping of Ukrainian National
Jakarta. Indonesian police have arrested one suspect in the kidnapping of a Ukrainian tourist in Bali, while six other foreign nationals remain at large, with some believed to have fled the country.
The suspect, identified only by the initial C, was detained in West Nusa Tenggara on Monday. Investigators said he allegedly rented a vehicle using a fake passport that was later used in the abduction of Ukrainian national Igor Komarov, 28.
C told police he was unaware the car would be used in a crime and said he had been asked by others to rent the vehicle in exchange for Rp 6 million (about $350).
The kidnapping took place on Feb. 15 at around 10:20 p.m. local time on Jalan Raya Jimbaran in Bali, according to Ariasandy, spokesperson for Bali Police.
Police tracked the suspects’ movements through closed-circuit television footage, which showed a car and two motorcycles traveling from Tabanan to Badung, including near the victim’s accommodation.
One of the vehicles was seen stopping at a villa in Tabanan. During a search of the property, officers found bloodstains matching blood discovered inside the car used by the suspects. Police believe the villa was where Komarov was held and assaulted.
Authorities have identified six additional suspects — all foreign nationals — by the initials RM, VK, AS, VN, SM and DH. They have been named as suspects and are now on the run.
According to police, four of them have left Indonesia, while two are believed to remain in Bali. Police have coordinated with Interpol and issued wanted notices, including red notices, for those who fled abroad.
As the investigation unfolds, a video circulating on Instagram from the account @mr.terimakasih, allegedly linked to a Russian national named Sergei Domogatsky, shows Komarov lying on a bed in a weakened condition. The victim appears bruised, with a swollen face and split lip, and is seen reading from a written statement accusing himself of fraud and leading a scam network. Police said they are verifying the authenticity of the video and identifying who first uploaded it.
Investigators said the group’s main target may have been Komarov’s associate, Ermak Petrovsky. During the incident, Petrovsky reportedly stabbed one of the attackers before managing to escape.
Police have seized a black Toyota Alphard believed to have been used in the abduction.
Ariasandy said authorities are continuing to pursue the remaining suspects and are committed to fully uncovering the case and ensuring the victim’s safety.
Separately, on Thursday afternoon, residents discovered mutilated human body parts near the Wos River estuary in Banjar Keden, Ketewel village, Sukawati district, Gianyar regency. The remains were taken to RSUP Prof Ngoerah for forensic examination.
Forensic specialists estimate the body parts had been dead for approximately three days before being recovered. Due to decomposition, visual identification is not possible, and DNA testing is underway.
Bali Police’s Disaster Victim Identification team has collected DNA samples and plans to compare them with those of families who have reported missing relatives, including Komarov’s family.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the remains are linked to the kidnapping. Police say both investigations are ongoing, with DNA analysis expected to determine whether the cases are connected.
