Badung, Bali. A detective unit chief at a police station in Indonesia's resort island of Bali has tested positive for ecstasy during a surprise internal drug screening, prompting an investigation by the provincial police's internal affairs division.

The officer, identified only by the initials MDP, serves as head of the criminal investigation unit at Kuta Police Station. He is currently being held and questioned by the Internal Affairs Division of Bali Police.

Bali Police spokesperson Ariasandy said the positive result emerged during a routine unannounced urine test conducted jointly with the internal affairs division on June 8 as part of efforts to prevent drug abuse within the police force.

"This was not an arrest operation. It is a routine activity carried out with internal affairs to anticipate drug abuse among police personnel," Ariasandy told reporters on Wednesday.

"We must ensure that while we combat drug crimes in the community, we do not overlook violations within our own institution. Officers found to have abused narcotics will face firm action," he added.

According to Ariasandy, only one officer tested positive during the screening. The officer was immediately handed over to the internal affairs division for further investigation.

Police have not yet determined how long the officer had been using the drug, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Ariasandy said the case would serve as an evaluation for the police force and reaffirmed Bali Police's commitment to taking strict action against officers involved in drug abuse.

"We are committed to eradicating drug abuse, especially among our own personnel, to prevent officers from using illegal narcotics," he said.
