Jakarta. Authorities in Jakarta shut down part of Jalan Gatot Subroto, a key thoroughfare in South Jakarta, on Friday afternoon as thousands of protesters gathered outside the Metro Jaya Police headquarters and the House of Representatives (DPR/MPR).

The closure began around 4 p.m. local time, with police urging motorists to avoid the Semanggi and DPR areas. “Due to a public assembly in the Semanggi area, Jalan Gatot Subroto, and the DPR/MPR compound, road users are advised to steer clear and follow officers’ directions for safety,” the Jakarta Traffic Police said in a social media post.

Protesters from various groups, including university students, ride-hailing drivers, and community organizations, began assembling at about 3:20 p.m., converging on the police headquarters. Their presence narrowed the usually busy road to a single lane.

Tensions flared briefly after riot police deployed in large numbers with buses and trucks to contain the crowd. The standoff escalated following the death of a motorcycle taxi driver who was fatally struck by a police armored vehicle in Bendungan Hilir on Thursday. The incident has fueled anger despite police issuing a public apology and pledging accountability.

Witnesses reported minor scuffles between demonstrators and riot police on Friday, though the situation later eased. Metro Jaya Deputy Police Chief Dekananto Eko Purwono personally monitored the protest, coordinating with his officers to maintain order.

Traffic on the city’s inner toll road remained generally smooth, though congestion began to build as more vehicles sought alternative routes.

Police maintained a heavy presence outside their headquarters and reiterated calls for peaceful demonstrations. “We urge protesters to express their views without resorting to violence,” an officer told reporters.

The protests add to mounting public pressure on Jakarta police following Thursday’s deadly incident. While authorities have acknowledged fault, demonstrators say they will continue to demand justice for the victim.
