US Embassy Urges American Citizens to Avoid Jakarta Protest Site
Jakarta. The US Embassy in Jakarta has issued a demonstration alert for US citizens in Indonesia ahead of planned protests on Thursday, warning of possible crowds, road closures and traffic disruptions in the capital.
In the alert, the embassy said it had received reports of demonstrations planned at several locations across Indonesia, including central Jakarta. One of the main sites is the House of Representatives (DPR) and People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta.
A demonstration near the parliament complex was expected to begin at around 10 a.m. local time, according to the alert.
The embassy warned that large crowds could affect security and mobility around protest sites. It also cautioned that demonstrations that begin peacefully could escalate into violence.
US citizens were advised to avoid the Parliament Complex and other areas where demonstrations are taking place, stay away from crowds and protest sites, and monitor local media for updates.
The embassy also urged travelers in Jakarta to allow extra time because of possible road closures and changes in traffic flows, and to follow instructions from local authorities.
Meanwhile, protesters coordinated by the Pati United Community Alliance (AMPB) began gathering outside the parliament complex on Thursday morning. The group is calling for the passage of an asset-forfeiture bill and tougher penalties for corruption, including the death penalty.
AMPB coordinator Supriyono, also known as Botok, has sought to reassure the public that the rally will remain peaceful.
Police have deployed 18,504 personnel to secure the parliament complex and other strategic locations across Jakarta, according to authorities.
Jakarta police have also detained dozens of people suspected of planning to cause unrest ahead of the demonstration. Officers reportedly seized bottles and flammable liquids, including gasoline, as well as machetes, sickles and several airsoft guns.
The rally comes almost exactly a year after a wave of demonstrations in August and September 2025 escalated into riots in Jakarta and several other Indonesian cities.
