Jakarta Protest: Parliament Sets Dec. 15 Deadline for Asset-Forfeiture Bill
Jakarta. The House of Representatives (DPR) has set Dec. 15, 2026, as the latest deadline for passing the long-delayed Asset-Forfeiture Bill, meeting a key demand of protesters gathered outside the parliament complex on Thursday.
The deadline was approved during a plenary session on Aug. 27 after DPR Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad proposed Dec. 15 as the final date for completing the legislation.
The Pati United Community Alliance (AMPB), one of the groups participating in the rally, has made passage of the bill one of its main demands.
AMPB coordinator Supriyono, also known as Botok, went a step further, calling on House leaders to resign from both their leadership positions and their seats as lawmakers if the bill is not passed by the deadline.
Supriyono delivered the demand during a meeting with House leaders at the parliament complex in Senayan on Thursday. He met with Deputy Speakers Sufmi Dasco Ahmad and Andre Rosiade of the Gerindra Party, Saan Mustopa of the Nasdem Party and Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal of the National Awakening Party (PKB).
Supriyono said the House leaders should take moral responsibility if they fail to honor the agreement.
“For example, excuse me, Mr. Dasco, he is ready to resign. Mr. Saan Mustopa is also ready to resign, and Mr. Cucun is also ready to resign if the agreement is not implemented,” Supriyono said, according to the meeting proceedings.
He urged the House leaders to commit to passing the bill in line with the decision reached during Thursday’s plenary session.
Supriyono said he had attended the plenary session and heard lawmakers commit to completing the bill by December at the latest.
“I attended the plenary session on the deliberation of the Asset-Forfeiture Bill for corruptors. I briefly heard that the bill would be completed or passed by December at the latest,” he said.
Commission III, which is handling the bill, will continue seeking input from stakeholders before it is submitted for a final vote. Commission III Chairman Habiburokhman said the commission had invited 50 speakers from various groups to contribute to the deliberations.
What is the Asset-Forfeiture Bill?
The proposed legislation is intended to strengthen Indonesia’s ability to trace, freeze, seize and ultimately forfeit assets linked to criminal activity, including corruption.
Beyond confiscating criminal proceeds, the bill would establish procedures for tracing and managing seized assets and returning them to the state or other rightful parties.
The legislation has been under discussion for years. It was first submitted to the House in 2008 but has repeatedly stalled amid disagreements over its provisions and implementation.
Deliberations resumed in 2026 as lawmakers sought to strengthen Indonesia’s legal framework for recovering assets linked to corruption and other crimes.
The bill has again become a major focus of public pressure, with AMPB also calling for the death penalty for corrupt officials.
The proposed legislation has sparked debate over how to strengthen asset recovery while protecting citizens’ rights and preventing potential abuse of state power.
