Indonesia, UK Sign Climate Cooperation Pact at COP30 in Brazil
Belem, Brazil. Indonesia and the United Kingdom have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation on climate change mitigation on the sidelines of the COP30 global climate conference in Belem, Brazil, on Friday.
The MoU was signed by Indonesian Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq and UK Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero Ed Miliband, marking a renewed commitment by both countries to collaborate toward a sustainable, low-carbon future.
“Indonesia is ready to be the world’s strategic partner in driving real solutions to the climate crisis,” Hanif said in a statement on Saturday, calling the partnership a step toward ensuring a “future for the planet.”
The agreement commits both nations to accelerate the transition toward a just, low-carbon, and climate-resilient economy, underpinned by joint projects, knowledge exchange, and technical training across institutions and regions. Hanif stressed that the partnership “is not symbolic” but will be swiftly implemented through concrete initiatives.
Miliband said the two countries agreed to align climate policies and create opportunities for innovation and shared prosperity. “This collaboration will help both the UK and Indonesia meet their climate goals and demonstrate that addressing the climate crisis can go hand in hand with creating decent jobs and driving economic growth,” he said.
The MoU covers enhanced efforts on climate mitigation and adaptation, transparent carbon governance, and the integration of low-carbon development across all levels of government. Both sides also agreed to establish a Joint Steering Committee (JSC) to oversee coordination, monitoring, and evaluation, ensuring effective implementation aligned with the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
The UK expressed strong interest in collaborating on energy transition, forestry and other land use (FOLU), and sustainable carbon governance to support global supply-chain integrity. These initiatives support Indonesia’s FOLU Net Sink 2030 target -- a national goal to ensure forest and land sectors absorb more carbon than they emit.
Indonesia, meanwhile, highlighted its priorities, including the drafting of a Climate Change Bill, strengthening a high-integrity carbon market, developing biodiversity credits, and facilitating carbon seller–buyer meetings to expand credible international carbon trade.
“We are optimistic that this partnership will accelerate emission reduction targets, enhance carbon market integrity, and drive green economic growth. This is not just diplomacy -- it is a concrete step toward a fair and low-emission future,” Hanif said.
