PLN Group Wins 46 Top Environmental Awards for Sustainability Performance
Jakarta. Indonesia’s state-owned power utility PLN Group has secured 46 environmental awards under the government’s PROPER program, underscoring its progress in embedding sustainability across its operations.
The awards, presented by the Environment Ministry, included 11 PROPER Gold and 35 PROPER Green recognitions for 2025, reflecting strong performance in environmental management and sustainable business practices.
Among PLN Group entities, PLN Indonesia Power contributed the largest share with seven Gold and 22 Green awards, followed by PLN Nusantara Power with four Gold and 12 Green awards. PLN Holding received one Green award.
PROPER Gold is the program’s highest rating, awarded to companies that go beyond regulatory compliance by demonstrating sustained environmental and social innovation, including community empowerment. PROPER Green recognizes firms that exceed compliance standards through strong environmental management systems, resource efficiency, and sustainable operations.
The results highlight PLN’s acceleration in integrating sustainability principles across its business lines, from renewable energy development and energy efficiency to circular economy initiatives and low-emission technologies supporting Indonesia’s decarbonization agenda.
PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo was also honored with the Green Leadership PROPER award, recognizing his role in driving the company’s transformation into a sustainable utility and advancing Indonesia’s energy transition.
Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, who presented the awards, said the PROPER program serves as a tangible benchmark of corporate environmental performance and its contribution to society.
“Hopefully, this recognition will encourage stronger performance both nationally and in global business competition,” Hanif said, while urging companies to maintain consistency so that top ratings become long-term standards rather than one-off achievements.
The 2025 PROPER assessment covered 5,476 companies, up 22% from the previous year, reflecting growing participation in environmental compliance and sustainability initiatives.
Darmawan said the awards validate PLN’s ongoing transformation, emphasizing the company’s commitment to strengthening sustainable business practices and accelerating the transition toward its Net Zero Emissions 2060 target.
Over the past five years, PLN has significantly improved its decarbonization performance, increasing greenhouse gas emissions reductions from 12.9 million tons of CO₂ in 2021 to 51.1 million tons in 2025.
This progress has been driven by renewable energy expansion—reaching around 9.4 gigawatts—alongside biomass co-firing at 52 coal-fired power plants, the deployment of clean coal technologies across roughly 14 gigawatts of capacity, and growth in gas-based generation, which produced 33.7 terawatt-hours in 2025.
“PLN’s transformation is not only about ensuring reliable electricity supply, but also about sustainability. We are committed to delivering power that is clean, reliable, and affordable,” Darmawan said.
He added that the achievements reflect a stronger corporate foundation in supporting sustainable development while reinforcing PLN’s contribution to Indonesia’s broader decarbonization targets.
