Power Restored in Eight Batam Areas After Hours-Long Blackout
Jakarta. Power has been restored in eight areas of Batam, Riau Islands, following a blackout that began early Monday, although the cause of the outage remains under investigation.
State-owned electricity company PLN Batam said electricity had returned to Batu Aji, Sagulung, Tiban, Batam Center, Baloi, Batu Ampar, Nagoya and Punggur, while restoration efforts continued in other areas.
The outage began at around 6:30 a.m., disrupting public services and daily activities across Batam City, including Bengkong, Sagulung and Sekupang. It also affected clean water distribution, as several pumping stations were unable to operate without electricity.
As of around noon, the Batam Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) building and the Batam mayor's office remained without power and were relying on generators.
PLN Batam said it was restoring electricity in stages, prioritizing critical infrastructure such as the airport, hospitals and port facilities. The company has yet to disclose the cause of the outage, saying its immediate focus was on restoring the power system.
Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said he would coordinate with PLN to investigate the incident.
“I'll try to check with PLN. I'll look into it,” Bahlil told reporters in Jakarta on Monday.
PLN Batam also said the blackout was unrelated to an internet service disruption reportedly caused by damage to an undersea cable connecting Singapore and Batam.
