PLN CEO Darmawan Prasodjo Wins Green Leadership Award for Third Time
Jakarta. PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo has received the Green Leadership PROPER award at the 2025 Environmental PROPER Awards, organized by Indonesia’s Environment Ministry, marking his third consecutive recognition for advancing sustainability within the state power utility.
The award underscores Darmawan’s consistent leadership in accelerating PLN’s green transformation, as the company integrates environmental sustainability into its core business operations.
Under his leadership, PLN recorded strong environmental performance in 2025, securing 11 PROPER Gold awards and 35 PROPER Green awards in the government’s environmental management assessment. The results reflect the company’s progress in embedding sustainability principles across its operations.
The award was presented by Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, who commended corporate leaders for contributing to sustainable business practices.
“To company leaders and CEOs, we extend our deepest appreciation. Your compliance efforts have significantly contributed to resource efficiency, pollution prevention, and initiatives that directly and indirectly support community economic development,” Hanif said at the ceremony in Jakarta on Tuesday.
He added that the PROPER program serves as a compass guiding businesses toward sustainable practices based on green economy principles, while encouraging companies to go beyond regulatory compliance.
“Those present here are figures shaping environmental direction at the national level. Once again, thank you,” he said.
Darmawan expressed appreciation for the recognition, saying PLN has accelerated its clean energy transition over the past five years through renewable energy development, emissions reduction, and value-added waste management.
“For PLN, PROPER is not merely about compliance, but about accelerating transformation. Our commitment is to provide reliable electricity that delivers value for both the environment and public welfare,” Darmawan said.
He added that PLN will continue to strengthen its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) implementation, accelerate its Net Zero Emissions 2060 target, improve operational efficiency, and expand community empowerment programs.
“We continue to drive green technology innovation, global collaboration, and make sustainability part of our corporate culture. Our role is not only to provide reliable electricity, but to ensure it is cleaner, environmentally friendly, and delivers added value to society,” he said.
As part of its decarbonization efforts, PLN has implemented various initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, including transitioning to renewable energy generation.
Between 2021 and 2025, PLN increased its emissions reduction from 12.9 million tons of CO₂ to 51.1 million tons.
The company also expanded its renewable energy capacity to around 9.4 gigawatts (GW) in 2025, while gas-based power generation reached 33.7 terawatt-hours (TWh) in the same year.
Since 2023, PLN has also developed hydrogen as part of its decarbonization strategy, launching Indonesia’s first Green Hydrogen Plant (GHP) at the Muara Karang gas and steam power plant in Jakarta.
In 2024, PLN became a regional pioneer by establishing Southeast Asia’s first geothermal-based GHP at the Kamojang geothermal power plant in West Java.
Excess hydrogen previously unused at PLN power plants has now been developed into a network of GHP facilities across 22 locations nationwide, with a total production capacity of 203 tons per year.
Looking ahead, PLN aims to expand the use of green hydrogen for coal plant co-firing, environmentally friendly transportation fuel, and industrial applications.
“These initiatives are expected not only to support environmental preservation but also to generate multiplier effects by creating jobs, strengthening local economies, and supporting national infrastructure development,” Darmawan said.
