Indonesia Targets 13 GW Solar Rollout in Initial Phase of 100 GW Plan
Jakarta. Indonesia is accelerating the development of solar power plants, with an initial rollout targeting 13 gigawatts (GW) as part of a broader 100 GW capacity plan, a senior government official said on Wednesday.
Muhammad Qodari, head of the Presidential Staff Office, said the first phase will prioritize regions with existing electricity distribution infrastructure to ensure faster deployment.
“As an initial step, the government is prioritizing 13 GW out of the total 100 GW target, especially in areas that already have power distribution networks,” Qodari said.
President Prabowo Subianto has set a goal of completing the full 100 GW solar capacity buildout within the next two years.
The solar expansion is part of a broader strategy to accelerate Indonesia’s transition toward renewable energy and strengthen national energy self-sufficiency.
Qodari added that the government is also developing small-scale solar power systems in rural areas, helping expand electricity access in remote regions.
One example is in Sumenep Regency, where solar power has been provided to around 900 households.
Before the introduction of solar power, electricity in these areas relied on diesel generators with limited operating hours, particularly when fuel supplies were disrupted.
“Now, two villages are powered by environmentally friendly energy, with an abundant source from sunlight and lower costs,” Qodari said.
