Jakarta. Indonesia is set to take part in France’s Bastille Day military parade on July 14, marking a deepening of bilateral ties between the two nations. The Indonesian delegation will appear as the official guest of honor during the annual celebration held on the Champs-Élysées in Paris.

The “Patriot Indonesia” contingent was officially dispatched on Sunday from Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in Jakarta by Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, Armed Forces Commander Gen. Agus Subiyanto, and National Police Chief Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo.

“This contingent will march as the guest of honor during the Bastille Day celebration on July 14, 2025, which commemorates the French Revolution,” said Sjafrie during the send-off ceremony.

Indonesia’s participation follows a formal invitation from French President Emmanuel Macron during his state visit to Jakarta in late May, when he met with President Prabowo Subianto.

The Indonesian delegation includes around 500 personnel from the military and police and cadets from both armed forces academies. Sjafrie noted that Indonesia is the only foreign country this year invited directly by the French president to join the parade.

“This is a great honor for Indonesia and a recognition of our growing presence on the global stage -- particularly among developing nations working to advance technological capabilities,” he said.

Held annually since 1880, the Bastille Day parade is one of the oldest and most prestigious military parades in the world. France often invites close allies, including the UK, fellow European Union members, and NATO countries, to participate.

In 2023, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the guest of honor, and Indian troops joined the parade.

Bastille Day, celebrated on July 14, marks the 1789 storming of the Bastille prison, a turning point in the French Revolution. It also commemorates the unity of the French people on July 14, 1790. The national holiday features parades, fireworks, and nationwide celebrations symbolizing liberty, equality, and fraternity.
