Jakarta. The Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) on Tuesday dismissed Indra Sjafri as head coach of the Indonesia U-23 national team following the country’s disappointing performance at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand.

Indonesia failed to progress beyond the group stage, falling short of expectations after PSSI had set a gold medal target for the tournament.

“We have conducted an evaluation and decided to end the working relationship between coach Indra Sjafri and PSSI,” Indonesia national team manager Sumardji said at a press conference in Jakarta.

As a form of personal accountability, Sumardji also announced his resignation as national team manager, although he will remain with PSSI in a different capacity.

“I will hand over my duties and responsibilities as manager of the senior and age-group national teams to the PSSI chairman so that the most suitable replacement can be appointed,” he said.

Defending champions Indonesia opened their SEA Games campaign with a 1–0 defeat to the Philippines. Although they later secured a 3–1 win over Myanmar, the result was not enough to book a place in the semifinals.

The outcome was widely seen as a major setback, particularly given that preparations for the SEA Games squad had been underway since last year. During the buildup, Indra Sjafri stepped in as head coach after Gerald Vanenburg unexpectedly resigned.

PSSI has not yet announced a replacement for the U-23 head coach role.
