Hidden Safe Reveals Rp 67 Billion Cash, 74 Kg Gold in Coal Graft Investigation
Jakarta. Indonesian police have seized around Rp 67.2 billion ($3.7 million) in cash and 74 kilograms of gold after raiding multiple locations as part of a widening corruption and money laundering investigation linked to coal procurement for state-owned power plants.
The National Police's Anti-Corruption Corps (Kortastipidkor), together with the Jakarta Police's Special Crimes Directorate, carried out simultaneous searches at 12 locations on Wednesday as part of investigations into three separate corruption cases.
The investigations involve alleged irregularities in coal procurement by state-owned electricity company PLN, corruption cases involving state insurers Asabri and Asuransi Jiwasraya, and the settlement of debts between Caturbangun Sarana and Krakatau Niaga Indonesia.
One of the searches targeted De'Clan Signature Cafe and a nearby money changer in South Jakarta, where investigators discovered a two-meter steel safe concealed behind a display case and embedded inside a wall.
After opening the safe, police found approximately SGD 3.13 million, $889,965 in US currency, and Rp 259 million in cash, with a combined value of nearly Rp 60 billion.
Investigators also confiscated documents, mobile phones and other electronic evidence. A separate search at a South Jakarta money changer uncovered an additional Rp 7.2 billion worth of foreign currency.
Later the same day, police searched a house in Sentul, West Java, where they found another hidden safe containing 74 kilograms of gold bars along with additional cash in foreign currencies.
Police said all seized assets are being examined as potential evidence in the alleged corruption and money laundering schemes.
The searches are part of an investigation launched this week into suspected corruption involving coal supplies to state-owned power plants dating back to 2018.
According to the Anti-Corruption Corps, investigators suspect procurement irregularities, including manipulation of documents related to the quality and quantity of coal delivered and payments that did not match the actual volume supplied.
Police estimate the alleged scheme may have caused state losses of around Rp 5 trillion (about $278 million) and may have contributed to recent power outages reported in several parts of Indonesia.
Head of the Anti-Corruption Corps, Totok Suharyanto, said the investigation remains at a preliminary stage. Authorities have collected documents, interviewed witnesses and analyzed initial evidence but have not yet named any suspects or filed criminal charges.
The raids also drew public attention after the residence of Febrie Adriansyah, Indonesia's Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes, was seen guarded by armed military personnel on Wednesday night. Neither the Indonesian military nor the Attorney General's Office has publicly explained the security presence.
