Jakarta. Mosque caretakers have been advised to keep the volume of their speakers at a "reasonable level" during Ramadan, when religious activities typically intensify into the late hours of the night and before dawn.

Muhadjir Effendy, the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, said on Wednesday that religious activities should not cause noise disturbances during times when others are resting.

"There is an agreement that speakers should be used reasonably to avoid disturbing the surrounding environment," Muhadjir told reporters at the State Palace in Jakarta.

"While calls to prayer can be loud, we should refrain from using high volumes during Quran recitations or loud chants praising God," he added.

A recent circular from the Religious Affairs Minister specifies that sound intensity from mosque speakers should be limited to 100 decibels, and late-night prayers and sermons should utilize internal speakers only.

Additionally, the circular advises that Ramadan sermons prioritize themes of brotherhood, religious tolerance, and national unity while avoiding the inclusion of political messages.

"The use of loudspeakers for religious activities must be regulated to ensure that worshippers can pray peacefully without disturbance," Muhadjir said.
