Jakarta. The Jakarta administration on Monday received 3,100 imported cattle from Australia as part of an initial procurement of 7,500 head aimed at securing meat supplies for Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr.

Governor Pramono Anung said all cattle that arrived were in good health and free from foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), following strict inspections conducted both before departure and upon arrival in the capital.

"Of the roughly 3,000 head that arrived earlier, not a single one was found to be sick,” Pramono said at Port of Tanjung Priok.

The imports, managed by city-owned meat distributor Perumda Dharma Jaya, are part of Jakarta’s strategy to maintain food security and stabilize beef prices during the fasting month and the Eid al-Fitr holiday period, when demand typically rises.

Ramadan starts on Feb.20 and Eid will fall on March 20.

Beyond short-term supply measures, the provincial government is also preparing a grassland management project in Ciangir, Legok, Banten, to support sustainable cattle fattening and strengthen the city’s long-term meat self-sufficiency.

“More of this will be directly managed by Dharma Jaya. We want Jakarta to be increasingly self-reliant in meat supply. The infrastructure is already in place — we just need to optimize it to ensure stable and sustainable supply,” Pramono said.

Jakarta’s daily demand for beef and buffalo meat stands at around 65 tons. That figure typically rises by about 4 percent during major religious holidays, including Ramadan and Eid.

“This stock will be used to meet Ramadan demand while replacing some cattle scheduled for slaughter this month. So supply remains secure and well maintained,” Pramono said.
