Jakarta. Employees of the copper miner PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) recently held an iftar event with 700 orphans and members of low-income households in Jakarta and Gresik.

Employees in the Kuala Kencana and Tembagapura operational areas, Mimika Regency, Central Papua, participated virtually.

"The presence of these orphans and the poor among us provides positive energy and a sense of gratitude for sharing with others. This aligns with the company's values, especially respect and commitment to the community within PTFI, including in Kuala Kencana, Tembagapura, Jakarta, and Gresik," PTFI  President Director Tony Wenas in Jakarta last week.

As many as 500 orphans and underprivileged kids from 11 foundations across the Greater Jakarta area took part in the iftar. Members of the Papuan Muslim community also participated. The same goes for 200 kids from foundations around the Gresik smelter area. This includes those coming from the Manyar, Kebomas, and Bungah districts.

But it was not just a fast-breaking event. There were a series of games that the kids could take part in.  Enthusiasm also soared high when storyteller Kak Awam Prakoso brought tales to life at the Jakarta event. They also did not return home with an empty hand as the children received donations and gifts from PTFI employees.

"We hope that the support we provide today will encourage these children to continue learning and achieve their dreams," said Tony.

Arif Latief, who chairs the Al Ikhlas Islamic Study Group (MTAI) of PTFI, said that the employees had actually initiated this program. The staff had partnered with the Muslim community Yayasan Masyarakat Muslim (YMM) in Tembagapura.

"PTFI's existence must always benefit all stakeholders. This event is proof that PTFI employees can collaborate and synergize, not only in work but also in social activities," he said.

The events saw attendance from PTFI top brass and 135 employees.
