British Tourist Dies after Alleged Assault by Four Australians in Bali
Denpasar. A British national identified as Paul Innes Dougan died after allegedly being assaulted by four Australian tourists at a bar in Bali’s Legian area near Kuta Beach on Aug. 5, police said on Sunday.
Dougan was taken to a hospital in Denpasar following the alleged assault but later died.
Police, however, have yet to determine the exact cause of his death or establish criminal responsibility in the case. Investigators are gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, reviewing medical records, and awaiting forensic findings before reaching a conclusion.
“We are still investigating the case, including whether the victim and the alleged perpetrators knew each other. The suspected perpetrators are Australian nationals,” police spokesman I Gede Adhi Saputra Jaya said.
“We are also reviewing CCTV footage from the scene and gathering statements from witnesses,” he added.
Police identified the four Australian nationals by their initials -- RGG, PAM, JRM, and TRZ. All four left Indonesia the day after the alleged assault.
Immigration records showed that they departed from I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport for Australia on Aug. 6.
Police said Dougan returned to his hotel after the alleged assault before later seeking medical treatment.
Based on witness statements and their preliminary investigation, police identified the four Australians as individuals suspected of being involved in the incident.
“They flew to Avalon in Victoria, Australia. Based on immigration records, all of the suspected perpetrators traveled to the same destination,” Saputra said.
Denpasar Police are continuing to investigate the relationship between Dougan and the four Australians and are working to establish the sequence of events at the bar.
Police are also coordinating with immigration authorities and other relevant agencies as part of the investigation, Saputra said.
Investigators are working with forensic doctors to conduct an autopsy to establish Dougan’s exact cause of death and determine whether his medical condition was linked to injuries sustained in the alleged assault.
