Banten Earthquake Felt in Jakarta and Bandung, Tsunami Risk Ruled Out
Jakarta. A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Banten and its vicinity on Wednesday at 07:53 AM. The tremors from the Banten earthquake were felt in Jakarta and as far as Bandung in West Java.
"It felt quite strong, but only for a short duration," Rini, a resident of Bogor City, told Beritasatu on Wednesday.
Another resident said that she felt the earthquake in Bandung. "The tremor felt so strong in Bandung," said @moruute via X (formerly Twitter).
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) explained that the epicenter of the Banten earthquake was located 72 kilometers southwest of Bayah district in Lebak Regency, Banten. Bayah is located 180 kilometers south of Jakarta.
As of now, there have been no reports of damage or casualties due to the Banten earthquake. BMKG confirms that the earthquake does not have the potential to cause a tsunami.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation for any developments.
Previously on Sunday, a tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 occurred in the Sumedang Regency in West Java. There were no casualties but 238 homes were affected by the earthquake.
