Breaking: 6.7-Magnitude Quake Shakes Central Sulawesi, Residents Flee Buildings
Palu, Central Sulawesi. A 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck the city of Palu and several areas across Central Sulawesi on Tuesday at around 11:30 a.m. local time, or 10:30 a.m. in Jakarta, triggering panic among residents who rushed out of their homes and buildings.
The tremor was strongly felt in Palu, Sigi, Donggala, and Tojo Una-Una regencies, according to local residents and authorities monitoring the situation.
In Palu, residents were seen evacuating buildings and gathering in open areas shortly after the quake struck. Some people also moved away from coastal areas as a precaution against possible aftershocks or tsunami risks.
“The shaking was quite strong and lasted for several seconds. Residents immediately ran outside because they feared aftershocks,” a Palu resident said.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or major structural damage as of Tuesday afternoon. Authorities were still assessing the impact of the earthquake in affected areas.
Officials urged the public to remain calm, follow information from official agencies, and avoid spreading unverified information on social media and messaging platforms.
