Arema FC to Share President's Cup Prize with Families Affected by Kanjuruhan Tragedy
Solo. Arema FC has pledged to donate 13.5 percent of their President's Cup 2024 prize of Rp 5.25 billion (approximately $324,000) to the families affected by the Kanjuruhan tragedy, one of the deadliest incidents in football history.
General Manager Yusrinal Fitriandi announced that the team’s victory is dedicated to the victims' families. "We want to honor the families of the Kanjuruhan tragedy victims with this championship. Their prayers and support have always been with us in every match," Yusrinal saidd on Monday.
The donation will be distributed among 135 victim families, with each receiving Rp 5 million.
"We recognize that no amount of money can replace lives. Nonetheless, we wish to share this joy with the victims' families," he added.
The Kanjuruhan tragedy occurred on Oct. 1, 2022, at Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang, East Java. Following a match between rivals Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya, a crowd surge resulted in a stampede when police fired tear gas to disperse the fans. The incident led to at least 135 deaths and hundreds of injuries, making it one of the most tragic events in football history. In response, Indonesia has since been required to improve stadium safety and implement international security standard
Additionally, President's Cup matches are held without away fans due to ongoing safety concerns.
Yusrinal expressed hope that Arema FC’s recent triumph will continue to bring pride to Aremania and the Malang region. "We will keep striving for greater achievements in Liga 1 next season," he concluded.
Arema FC secured their fourth President's Cup trophy by defeating Borneo FC in a penalty shootout during the final at Manahan Stadium in Solo, Central Java, on Sunday. After a 1-1 draw over two halves, Arema FC emerged victorious with a 5-4 win in the penalty shootout.
