Jakarta. Indonesia's capital will hold the peak celebration of its 499th anniversary on Friday evening at the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle in Central Jakarta, featuring musical performances, light shows, and public festivities as the city looks ahead to its fifth century.

Carrying the theme "Towards Five Centuries of Jakarta," this year's anniversary serves as both a reflection on the capital's long history and a statement of its ambitions to become an inclusive, competitive, and sustainable global city.

The main celebration at the landmark Bundaran HI area will feature performances by Indonesian musicians and a lighting show that is expected to draw thousands of residents and visitors.

Suharini Eliawati, chair of the city's anniversary organizing committee, said the annual celebration is not merely a ceremonial event but also an opportunity to reflect on Jakarta's historical journey and future direction.

"This year's commemoration is an important moment to reflect on Jakarta's long journey while reaffirming our commitment to building an inclusive, competitive, and sustainable global city," Suharini said.

As of Friday afternoon, workers were still completing final preparations around the main stage at Bundaran HI. Organizers said supporting facilities and event infrastructure had been prepared to ensure the festivities proceed safely and smoothly.

Authorities will implement temporary traffic diversions around the venue to accommodate the event. Traffic management measures will be applied gradually and according to conditions on roads connected to the Bundaran HI area.

The traffic arrangements are scheduled to be in effect from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. local time, with motorists advised to adjust their travel routes to avoid congestion around central Jakarta.

The anniversary celebrations are also accompanied by several public incentives introduced by the city administration. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung announced free public transportation services and complimentary entry to several major tourist attractions on June 22, 27, and 28.

The program covers public transportation services across the capital and free access to popular destinations including Ancol, the National Monument (Monas), and Ragunan Zoo. The benefits are available to all Indonesian citizens.

As Jakarta approaches its 500th anniversary next year, city officials have used this year's celebration to highlight the capital's transformation from Indonesia's political center into a global city focused on sustainability, competitiveness and quality of life.
