Vietnam’s VinFast to Invest $1.2B in Indonesian EV Assembly Plant
Jakarta. Vietnam-based automotive company VinFast Auto Ltd. plans to construct an electric vehicle assembly plant in Bekasi, West Java, with an investment of $1.2 billion, according to reports on Sunday.
The Bekasi plant will serve as VinFast’s regional production base for right-hand drive EVs.
“It will supply right-hand drive electric vehicles to countries like Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, and Australia,” VinFast Indonesia marketing director Surachman Nugroho was quoted by Antara news agency as saying in Jakarta.
In addition, the assembly plant will also produce EV batteries and electric scooters, he added. Surachman also said the assembly plant will occupy a land of 200 hectares in Bekasi, just east of Jakarta, but he didn’t go into details.
VinFast is set to penetrate the Indonesian EV market this year by delivering several models fully built in Vietnam.
On its website, the company claims to be one of the biggest manufacturing plants in ASEAN with an annual capacity of up to 300,000 cars and 500,000 e-scooters.
