Inside BYD’s Electric Vehicle Empire
Shenzhen, China. BYD has emerged as one of Indonesia’s leading car suppliers, surpassing the sales of several Japanese automakers that have operated in the country for decades and have established local assembly facilities.
The achievement is particularly notable given that BYD relies exclusively on electric vehicles and only began making a full-scale push into the Indonesian market about three years ago.
BYD strengthened its presence in Indonesia with the inauguration of an assembly plant in Subang, West Java, on Sept. 3. The facility has an annual production capacity of 150,000 vehicles and employs more than 5,000 local workers.
BYD Vice President Liu Xueliang said establishing a factory in Indonesia had been a dream for the company for 30 years.
Founded in 1994, BYD has grown into a Fortune 500 company with a presence in more than 120 countries. The company continues to invest heavily in research and development, including battery and charging technologies.
At its exhibition hall in Shenzhen on Sept. 4, BYD demonstrated technology capable of charging an electric vehicle battery from 20% to more than 90% in 12 minutes, even at a temperature of minus 30 degrees Celsius.
BYD says its flash-charging technology holds the record for charging speed among mass-produced vehicles. The company plans to build 20,000 flash-charging stations by the end of 2026.
In 2025, BYD sold 4.6 million vehicles worldwide, including more than 1 million units overseas, setting a new company record.
