Indonesia Car Sales Jump 18% Through July as Market Rebounds
Jakarta. Indonesia's automotive market continued its recovery in the first seven months of 2026, with wholesale car sales jumping 18.3% year-on-year to 517,742 units, industry data showed.
The figure compared with 437,544 vehicles distributed to dealers during the January-July period last year, according to the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo).
Retail sales, which more closely reflect purchases by end customers, increased 12.3% year-on-year to 511,514 units over the same period.
"Improving economic conditions and consumer purchasing power supported car sales growth in July," Gaikindo Market Development Chairman Jongkie Sugiarto said.
Brands under diversified conglomerate Astra International, including Toyota, Daihatsu and UD Trucks, continued to account for more than half of the national market.
Astra recorded wholesale sales of 261,440 vehicles between January and July, up 12% from the corresponding period last year, while non-Astra brands sold 256,286 units.
"The national automotive industry recorded positive growth through July 2026, while Astra Group's car sales during the same period also grew 12% from a year earlier," Astra Head of Corporate Communications Windy Riswantyo said in a statement on Thursday.
Indonesia is targeting national car sales of at least 850,000 units this year.
July Sales Accelerate
The market gained further momentum in July, when wholesale shipments reached 81,115 units, up 4.5% from June and surging 33.3% from a year earlier.
Retail sales rose 3.6% month-on-month to 77,412 units and were 23% higher than in July 2025.
Toyota remained Indonesia's best-selling automotive brand at the retail level in July with 21,008 vehicles, followed by Daihatsu with 12,750, Mitsubishi Motors with 6,041 and Suzuki with 5,844.
Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD ranked fifth with retail sales of 5,240 units, ahead of Mitsubishi Fuso and Honda.
BYD performed even more strongly in wholesale distribution, ranking third nationally with 6,569 units, behind only Toyota and Daihatsu.
Another Chinese automaker, Jaecoo, ranked eighth in both wholesale and retail sales, with 3,200 units.
Other Chinese brands including Geely, Wuling, Chery, Aion and Denza remained outside the top 10 in July retail sales.
