Rupiah Climbs on Surplus Momentum and Softer External Pressures
Jakarta. Rupiah closed stronger on Friday as improving domestic fundamentals and shifting global sentiment lifted the currency ahead of the weekend.
The rupiah firmed 20 points against the US dollar to Rp 16,716 on Friday afternoon, after briefly strengthening 30 points earlier in the session. The currency had closed at Rp 16,736 the previous day.
Bank Indonesia reported a $4.0 billion current account surplus in the third quarter of 2025, equivalent to 1.1 percent of GDP, the country’s first surplus in 10 quarters. The data helped support the rupiah from the domestic side.
Externally, the US Labor Department’s decision to cancel the release of October’s jobs data eased expectations of a December rate cut by the Federal Reserve. The move followed September’s unexpected 119,000 job gains, alongside a rise in US unemployment to 4.4 percent and downward revisions to previous months.
Ibrahim Assuaibi, Director at Traze Andalan Futures, said hawkish remarks from Federal Reserve officials added to the sentiment shift.
“Comments from the Cleveland Fed President warned that easing policy too soon could elevate financial risks, while Fed Governor Michael Barr voiced concern over inflation still at 3 percent,” he said on Friday.
Geopolitical sentiment also supported the rupiah. Tensions in Eastern Europe cooled after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said he had received a 28-point peace plan formulated jointly by the US and Russia.
Ibrahim added that new US sanctions on Russian oil giants Rosneft and Lukoil, effective Friday night, could have further implications for rupiah movements going forward.
